Rescue Story: As a member of the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) and a founding member of the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance (BCSA), Turpentine Creek is often called in by Government Organizations to handle high profile cases. In September of 2020, Turpentine Creek rescued four tigers and four lions from Tim Stark’s Wildlife In Need, a cub-petting scheme operating as a pseudo-sanctuary. A federal judge ordered the animals be removed from the Indiana facility due to Stark’s inhumane declawing practices and his practice of prematurely removing cubs from their mothers. The haphazard rescue involved missing and abandoned animals, as well as an angry and on-the-run Tim Stark. We required assistance from the U.S Marshals, who had to sweep the property before we were even allowed to enter, and stood guard throughout the rescue. All the cats were immediately treated for health issues; they were arthritic from being declawed, invested with intestinal parasites, and had other individual health concerns.

More about Chief: When Chief was rescued he was very sick. We are positive that if his rescue had been delayed he would not have survived. This handsome lion was dehydrated, malnourished, and severely infested with worms. Luckily, we were able to get Chief fluids while rescuing him and in the days proceeding. Chief had many health issues when he arrived, but with the dedicated work of our team, he is quickly improving. Now that he is feeling better, Chief likes to run and play, something he reportedly did not do at his old home. Chief has had issues with his legs most of his life according to records, and we will be keeping a close eye on him due to this. Chief is very patient with his habitat mate Mauri, who is 10 years younger than him. He loves to carol and “talk” to anyone who will listen. Chief loves to scratch on the big log in his habitat, take long naps throughout the day, roll around on the enrichment boxes and carol with the other lions.
